Kolkata: The West Bengal government has transferred Dr. Subarna Goswami, a key figure in the protests demanding justice for the rape and murder of a woman doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in August last year.
Dr. Goswami, who was serving as Deputy CMOH-II in Purba Bardhaman, has now been appointed as Superintendent of Darjeeling TB Hospital, a posting far from her current location in southern Bengal. The transfer was made with immediate effect, according to an official notification released on Thursday.
Protest and Controversy
Dr. Goswami had been vocal about the lack of safety for medical professionals and had played a significant role in mobilizing protests after the 31-year-old postgraduate trainee was found dead under suspicious circumstances in a seminar hall at RG Kar Medical College. The case had led to widespread outrage across the state, with demands for a thorough investigation.
Allegations of Political Pressure?
Many in the medical community see Dr. Goswami’s transfer as politically motivated and an attempt to silence voices demanding justice. Some doctors and healthcare workers are now questioning whether the transfer is a form of punishment for speaking out against the system.
Meanwhile, Dr. Sunetra Majumder, who serves as Deputy CMOH-IV of Purba Bardhaman, has been temporarily assigned additional charge of Deputy CMOH-II until further notice.
The transfer has sparked fresh debates over freedom of speech in the medical community, as well as concerns about the safety of healthcare professionals in Bengal.
