Belagavi: In a disturbing case of alleged medical negligence, surgeons at the Belagavi Institute of Medical Sciences (BIMS) reportedly operated on a youth admitted for a stomach tumour but instead cut a portion of his intestine.

The patient, Mahesh Madar, was admitted to BIMS on June 20 with complaints of severe stomach pain. After tests, doctors diagnosed him with a stomach tumour and scheduled surgery. However, his family later discovered that instead of removing the tumour, a section of his intestine had allegedly been cut.

After the operation, Mahesh was discharged, but his abdominal pain worsened. His family then shifted him to KLE Hospital, Belagavi, where a medical scan revealed the alleged error. Surgeons at KLE performed another surgery to remove the tumour, and Mahesh is currently undergoing treatment.

The two procedures have cost his family around ₹20 lakh, and they are now demanding strict action against the doctors at BIMS, holding them responsible for the suffering and financial burden.

Reacting to the allegations, BIMS Medical Director Dr. Ashok Kumar Shetty confirmed that an inquiry has been initiated into the conduct of the surgeons involved. A detailed report will be submitted to the Department of Health and Medical Education.

The case has sparked outrage in the community, with calls for greater accountability in government hospitals and stricter measures to curb medical negligence.
