Guwahati: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Wednesday affirmed that comprehensive measures are being implemented to elevate the Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) into one of the largest and most advanced medical facilities in India.
As reported by ANI, the Chief Minister emphasized the ongoing development of a state-of-the-art 800-bed Mother and Child Care Hospital within the GMCH premises. This facility will provide dedicated and specialised paediatric and maternal care, as part of broader efforts to restructure and modernize the GMCH campus.
Medical Infrastructure Expansion in Full Swing
During his visit, CM Sarma also inspected the upcoming Pragjyotishpur Medical College and Hospital—Guwahati’s second medical college—adding that it is expected to become fully operational by August 15. The new institution will include postgraduate study programs in key disciplines such as obstetrics and orthopedics.
Looking ahead, Sarma announced plans for the construction of an additional 500-bed building at the new medical college to further bolster healthcare infrastructure in the region.
Super-Speciality Services to be Shifted to New Campus
As part of the transformation, super-speciality services including neurology, cardiology, and kidney transplant units will be relocated to the new 800-bed hospital. Once completed—targeted for October this year—the GMCH Principal’s office will also shift to the newly constructed building.
Sarma was accompanied during the site review by top state officials, including Siddharth Singh, Commissioner and Secretary of Medical Education and Research, and Chandan Sharma, Commissioner and Special Secretary of the Public Works Department.
First Robotic Surgery Facility Already Inaugurated
It’s worth noting that GMCH recently marked a significant milestone with the inauguration of Assam’s first robotic surgery unit at the State Cancer Institute, further underscoring the government’s commitment to cutting-edge healthcare services.
