Dehradun :
Dr. Tanzim Akram, a medical professional posted at AIIMS Rishikesh, has been booked under multiple sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) following allegations that he posted objectionable content on social media and distributed sweets purportedly to celebrate the April 22 terrorist attack on unarmed tourists in Pahalgam, Jammu & Kashmir.

The complaint was lodged by Rajendra Pandey, a resident of Tapovan, who accused Dr. Akram of distributing sweets on April 23 within the AIIMS campus. When confronted, Akram reportedly claimed the distribution was for Ramadan or Eid, though neither festival was observed that day. He is also alleged to have shared anti-national content online, further aggravating the controversy.

Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Ajai Singh confirmed that an FIR was registered on May 16 under BNS sections 196(1)(a), 196(1)(b), and 197(1)(a) — which pertain to offences against public tranquillity, promoting enmity between groups, and actions prejudicial to national integration.

Key developments:

  • Dr. Akram has reportedly absented himself from duty since the controversy began.
  • AIIMS Rishikesh has not issued an official statement, but sources indicate internal resentment among staff.
  • Hindu nationalist groups, including the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP), have staged protests and demanded the doctor’s immediate arrest and dismissal.
  • Police are currently examining social media evidence, including screenshots submitted by the complainants.
  • Investigations are ongoing and the AIIMS administration has stated it is fully cooperating with authorities.

SSP Ajai Singh emphasized that the police are taking the matter seriously and further legal action will be based on the outcome of the ongoing investigation.
