Family Demands Probe, Post-Mortem Examination and Action Against Doctors After Maternal Death at AMC-Run Hospital
A 35-year-old woman died while undergoing treatment during childbirth at Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC)-run Shardaben Hospital in Ahmedabad’s Saraspur area, triggering allegations of medical negligence from her family members. The incident has sparked outrage among relatives and local residents, who have demanded a thorough investigation and strict action against those responsible.
The deceased, identified as Priyaben Patni, a resident of Sanjay Nagar in Ahmedabad’s Bapunagar area, was admitted to Shardaben Hospital after experiencing labour pain. According to family members, Priyaben was initially receiving treatment at a private hospital but was shifted to the government-run facility due to financial difficulties.
Relatives alleged that her health condition deteriorated during the night and that she died in the early hours of Thursday while undergoing treatment. The family has accused the hospital of gross medical negligence, claiming that no senior doctors were present during the delivery process.
According to the allegations, nursing staff were managing the case while receiving instructions over the phone from doctors. The family believes that delays and lapses in medical care contributed to Priyaben’s death and has demanded accountability from the hospital administration.
Following the incident, relatives and local residents gathered at the hospital and staged a protest, demanding a transparent inquiry into the circumstances surrounding the death. The family has also sought police intervention and requested a post-mortem examination to determine the exact cause of death.
However, hospital authorities have denied the allegations of negligence. Doctors on duty stated that the patient experienced a sudden medical complication, during which her heart rate increased rapidly before she lost consciousness. Despite efforts by the medical team to revive her, she could not be saved.
As of now, the hospital administration has not announced whether an internal investigation will be initiated. Meanwhile, police officials stated that they are awaiting a formal complaint from the family. Further action will be taken based on the findings of the medical examination and any subsequent legal proceedings.
The incident has once again raised concerns about maternal healthcare services and the availability of senior medical staff during emergency deliveries at public hospitals. Authorities are expected to review the case after receiving the post-mortem report and other relevant medical records.
