Elderly Woman from Malappuram Succumbs to Infection as State Reports Fresh Cases
Kerala has reported one more death linked to Shigella infection, taking the total number of fatalities from the bacterial disease to six, according to data released by the state Health Department. Officials also confirmed 12 new cases of Shigella infection across the state, raising concerns over the spread of communicable diseases.
The latest victim was a 75-year-old woman from Malappuram district, health department sources confirmed on Wednesday. The death comes amid heightened surveillance and preventive measures being implemented by health authorities across Kerala.
New Shigella Cases Detected Across Kerala
Among the 12 newly reported cases, a 62-year-old woman from Koothuparamba in Kannur district tested positive for the infection. She reportedly sought treatment at a private hospital after experiencing symptoms such as severe diarrhoea and the passage of blood and mucus in stools.
Following laboratory confirmation of the infection, health authorities launched an investigation to identify the possible source of transmission. Officials stated that efforts are underway to trace contacts and prevent further spread of the disease.
What is Shigella Infection?
Shigella is a highly contagious bacterial infection that primarily affects the intestines. It commonly causes diarrhoea, fever, stomach cramps, nausea, and, in severe cases, bloody stools. The infection spreads through contaminated food and water, poor hygiene practices, and direct contact with infected individuals.
Public health experts emphasize the importance of hand hygiene, safe drinking water, and proper sanitation to reduce the risk of infection.
Nipah Virus Monitoring Continues
Meanwhile, health officials reported progress in Nipah virus surveillance efforts. One more individual under observation at Kozhikode Medical College Hospital was discharged after symptoms subsided.
With the latest discharge, five out of the nine individuals admitted from the Nipah virus contact list have been released, while four remain under medical observation.
Health Minister Orders Enhanced Precautionary Measures
In response to the increasing number of communicable disease cases, Kerala Health Minister K. Muraleedharan directed healthcare workers and members of the public to wear masks while visiting hospitals and during episodes of fever.
The minister also instructed authorities to strengthen disease-prevention measures in schools and other public institutions to curb the spread of infections.
Previous Deaths Raise Concern
Earlier this week, Kerala reported two additional deaths due to Shigella infection, taking the death toll to five at that time. Among the deceased was seven-year-old Arjav from Pookkottur in Malappuram district, who died while undergoing treatment at Kozhikode Government Medical College Hospital.
Health officials continue to monitor the situation closely and have urged the public to seek immediate medical attention if symptoms such as persistent diarrhoea, fever, abdominal pain, or bloody stools develop.
