Rs 244.87 crore facility to feature 77 critical-care beds, nine high-tech operation theatres and 48 specialist OPD rooms; project targeted for completion by 2028
The Delhi government has approved the construction of a 250-bed super-speciality cum trauma block at Guru Tegh Bahadur (GTB) Hospital in Dilshad Garden under Phase-IV of the Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Suraksha Yojana (PMSSY).
The facility, estimated to cost Rs 244.87 crore, is expected to be completed by 2028. The proposed seven-storey block will provide integrated emergency, diagnostic, critical-care and surgical services for patients requiring specialised trauma and emergency treatment.
New Trauma Block to Come Up Within Existing GTB Hospital Campus
The new facility will be constructed within the existing GTB Hospital campus in East Delhi, eliminating the need for additional land acquisition.
The project was approved at a Delhi Cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Rekha Gupta. According to the government, GTB Hospital is the only major government hospital in East Delhi and continues to experience a heavy patient load, with almost all beds remaining occupied.
The proposed expansion is aimed at increasing the availability of modern trauma and emergency-care services for accident victims and critically ill patients.
Seven-Storey Facility to Spread Across 22,550 Square Metres
The trauma block will cover approximately 22,550 square metres and will consist of a basement, ground floor and six upper floors.
The facility will include:
- 250 beds
- 48 specialist OPD rooms
- Nine modern operation theatres
- 77 critical-care beds
- A 24×7 emergency department
- CT scan, MRI and X-ray facilities
- Blood bank and laboratory facilities
- Training facilities for doctors
The basement will house the blood bank and laboratory, while the ground floor will accommodate the 24×7 emergency department and diagnostic services.
ICU, Emergency and Ward Facilities
A 72-bed ICU will be located on the second floor. The fourth and fifth floors will accommodate 175 general and private ward beds.
The sixth floor will include offices, classrooms and a laboratory for training doctors.
Of the total 250 beds, the proposed allocation includes:
- 20 beds for emergency care
- Five beds for the burns ICU
- 70 ICU beds
- Four isolation beds
- 22 pre- and post-surgery beds
- 102 general ward beds
- 25 private rooms
The project is planned to provide emergency care, diagnostics, intensive care and surgical services within an integrated facility.
Specialist Services to Be Available
The new trauma block will provide several specialist services, including neurology, orthopaedics, dermatology and dental care.
The facility will have 77 critical-care beds intended for patients requiring intensive medical management.
According to the Delhi government, bringing emergency, diagnostic, intensive-care and surgical services together is expected to expand the capacity to manage serious accident and emergency cases in East Delhi.
Central and Delhi Government Committee to Monitor Project
A committee comprising senior officials from the central and Delhi governments will be constituted to monitor the construction project.
The committee will meet once every three months to review the progress of the project and monitor its implementation.
