Ahmedabad: Khyati Multispeciality Hospital in Ahmedabad is under scrutiny following allegations of botched angioplasties. An investigation by the Ahmedabad crime branch has uncovered 112 deaths over the past three years, occurring during or after treatment under government healthcare schemes.
According to a report, the findings emerged as part of the probe into the hospital’s activities. This follows the recent arrest of Dr. Sanjay Patolia, a bariatric surgeon and director of the hospital, after two patients enrolled under the PMJAY (Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana) died following unnecessary angioplasty procedures.
Between September 2021 and October 2024, the hospital treated approximately 8,500 patients, including 3,842 individuals who received free treatment under government programs like PMJAY, said Assistant Commissioner of Police Bharat Patel. “Our investigation shows that of the 3,842 beneficiaries, 112 died during or after treatment in this period. We will consult medical experts to examine these deaths,” Patel stated.
Further inquiries revealed financial discrepancies. The hospital management allegedly divided revenue under various account heads and reported a loss of ₹1.5 crore in its last financial report. Seven individuals, including Khyati Multispeciality CEO Rahul Jain and marketing director Chirag Rajput, have been arrested in connection with the deaths of the two PMJAY beneficiaries. Meanwhile, hospital chairman Kartik Patel, currently abroad, and director Rajshri Kothari are absconding, police said.
The investigation began after complaints from the families of two patients who died following angioplasties performed on November 11. Angioplasty, a procedure to widen blocked or narrowed coronary arteries, was reportedly conducted without medical necessity. Police allege the hospital hosted free medical camps in villages to persuade PMJAY cardholders to undergo angioplasties. Patients were falsely categorized under “emergency” cases to secure expedited government approval for the procedures, allowing the hospital to claim payments under the health scheme.
On November 12, Vastrapur police registered three FIRs related to the two PMJAY deaths and arrested visiting cardiologist Dr. Prashant Vazirani. The accused face charges including culpable homicide not amounting to murder, forgery, and criminal conspiracy. The FIRs allege the hospital management and involved doctors conspired to exploit the government health scheme for financial gain.
