Elections to be Held Across 38 Polling Centers, 7,670 Doctors to Vote in Nagpur

Nagpur: The Maharashtra Medical Council (MMC) elections are set to take place on Thursday, April 3, where nearly 1.30 lakh doctors from across the state will elect nine representatives. These elected members will oversee the regulation of the medical profession for the next five years.

The elections will be conducted through a secret ballot at designated polling centers in each district under the supervision of the district collector. In Nagpur, voting will take place at Hostel No. 3 near the dean’s office at Government Medical College (GMC). To accommodate the city’s 7,670 registered voters (3,941 male and 3,729 female doctors), a total of 16 polling booths will be set up. Polling will be conducted from 8 AM to 5 PM.

Role of MMC and Election Process

The Maharashtra Medical Council is a quasi-governmental, quasi-judicial body responsible for regulating medical practitioners in the state. With over 2 lakh registered doctors, MMC plays a crucial role in maintaining ethical medical practices, upholding scientific standards, issuing licenses, and investigating complaints against doctors.

The nine elected members will serve a five-year term, making key decisions impacting both medical practitioners and patients. Currently, MMC is functioning under an administrator, as the previous elected body’s tenure ended during the COVID-19 pandemic, delaying the elections. Before the pandemic, the Indian Medical Association (IMA)-led panel was in charge of MMC.

The IMA has once again introduced a panel of nine candidates for this election, while the Parivartan panel is also in the race. Several independent candidates and other panels are also contesting.

The district collector’s office has stated that only registered medical practitioners whose names appear on the electoral roll are eligible to vote. Voters must carry a valid photo ID for verification.
