
Madurai: The Sivaganga police arrested a 20-year-old man on Wednesday for assaulting a woman compulsory rotatory medical internship (CRMI) doctor at Sivagangai Medical College Hospital on Monday night.
Incident Details
According to police investigations, the accused, identified as Santosh from Avarankadu, Sivaganga, allegedly followed the woman doctor and attempted to assault her by covering her face with a cloth. The attack took place as she was returning to her hostel. The suspect reportedly slapped her before fleeing when she raised an alarm.
Protests by Doctors
In response to the attack, over 100 CRMI doctors, along with various doctors’ associations, staged a protest for the second consecutive day on Wednesday. They demanded increased security measures, including CCTV surveillance in all hospital areas, adequate security personnel, and well-maintained resting facilities for doctors. They also called for stricter legal action against those committing violence or harassment against medical professionals.
Police Action and Investigation
Following the protests, the Sivagangai Town police registered a case under relevant sections of the Tamil Nadu Prohibition of Harassment of Women Act. They also reviewed hospital CCTV footage as part of their investigation.
