MD Radiologist Claims Prospective Grooms’ Families Sought Massive Dowry and Share in Property; Social Media Reacts
A viral social media post by a woman radiologist has reignited the debate over the continued prevalence of the dowry system in India. The doctor alleged that despite being highly qualified and financially independent, she encountered repeated dowry demands while searching for a life partner, highlighting the emotional and social challenges faced by many women even today.
According to media reports, the doctor introduced herself as an MD in Radiodiagnosis and said she is the eldest of three daughters. She stated that she is financially independent and capable of supporting both herself and her family. However, her search for a suitable marriage alliance became emotionally exhausting due to the dowry expectations allegedly raised by prospective grooms’ families.
Alleged Demand of Rs 50 Crore Dowry
In her widely shared post, the radiologist claimed that one prospective groom’s family demanded dowry worth Rs 50 crore. She further alleged that another family sought 10 percent of her property under a local custom known as “aadapaduchu katnam,” reportedly justifying the demand because the groom’s brother was also a doctor.
The doctor wrote that these demands placed immense emotional pressure on her parents, who were helping her find a suitable match. Despite the stress, she said her family refused to compel her to accept such proposals.
“Can’t We Really Eradicate the Dowry System?”
Ending her post on a reflective note, the radiologist questioned the persistence of the practice, asking, “Can’t we really eradicate the dowry system?” Her message quickly gained traction across social media platforms, prompting widespread discussion about dowry practices, gender equality, and societal expectations in marriage.
Social Media Users Divided
The viral post drew mixed reactions from users online. While many expressed support for the doctor and condemned dowry practices, others debated whether financial expectations in modern marriages have evolved into broader discussions about income, assets, and legal responsibilities.
According to Moneycontrol, one user commented that the doctor could consider marrying someone outside the medical profession, arguing that many engineers would not expect dowry. Another user claimed that increasing alimony obligations have contributed to rising dowry expectations, a viewpoint that sparked further debate among social media users.
Dowry Remains a Persistent Social Challenge
Although dowry is prohibited under Indian law, allegations of dowry demands continue to surface across different sections of society. The radiologist’s viral post has once again drawn attention to the gap between legal provisions and social realities, with many users calling for stronger awareness and stricter enforcement against dowry-related practices.
