Dr. Rupinder Kaur’s inspiring journey redefines limits and highlights the power of resilience
In a remarkable feat of determination and courage, Dr. Rupinder Kaur, an Ayurvedic practitioner from Ludhiana, has successfully completed the challenging trek to Everest Base Camp—despite having 65 per cent disability in both legs.
Currently serving as an Ayurveda Medical Officer at a Primary Health Centre (PHC) in Jodhan, Dr. Kaur is a wheelchair user and a polio survivor. Her achievement stands as a powerful testament to perseverance and mental strength.
Part of a Specially-Abled Expedition Team
Dr. Kaur was among a six-member team of differently abled individuals from across India who undertook the expedition organized by the Tinkesh Ability Foundation. Notably, she was the only participant representing Punjab.
The expedition began on April 5 and concluded successfully on April 14. The team navigated difficult terrain, unpredictable weather, and high-altitude challenges—conditions that demand both physical endurance and mental resilience.
Overcoming Terrain and Physical Barriers
Throughout the trek, Dr. Kaur demonstrated exceptional grit. During the most demanding stretches, she received assistance, including piggyback support, which enabled her to continue without breaking momentum.
Her journey was not just physically demanding but also required constant adaptation to changing environmental conditions, making her accomplishment even more extraordinary.
Rigorous Preparation and Custom Adaptations
Ahead of the expedition, Dr. Kaur followed a disciplined training regimen. She practiced daily using her wheelchair to build stamina and improve breathing capacity—crucial for high-altitude trekking.
She also customized her wheelchair to better handle the rugged terrain, showcasing her practical approach and determination to overcome logistical challenges.
A Message Beyond Achievement
A graduate of Bachelor of Ayurveda Medicine and Surgery (BAMS) from Moga, Dr. Kaur has been actively serving in the public healthcare sector. She credits her family’s unwavering support for helping her navigate life’s challenges and achieve her goals.
Reflecting on her journey, she emphasized a powerful message: individuals with disabilities do not need sympathy, but encouragement, equal opportunities, and belief in their capabilities.
Her story stands as an inspiration—not just for the differently abled community, but for anyone facing adversity.
