Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Tuesday conducted a comprehensive review meeting of the state’s health and medical education departments, stressing the need to improve treatment quality, diagnostics, medicines, emergency services and medical infrastructure across government hospitals.

During the meeting, the Chief Minister said that public trust in healthcare can only be strengthened when technology, accountability and sensitivity work together in the system. He directed officials to modernise medical colleges, nursing institutions and super-speciality healthcare services through advanced technology, better human resources and effective management.

The Chief Minister emphasised that the aim of medical education should not merely be increasing the number of institutions, but producing trained doctors, specialists and skilled healthcare workers. He also highlighted the importance of promoting research, expert faculty and modern medical equipment in institutions.

According to official data presented during the meeting, Uttar Pradesh currently has 108 district hospitals, 106 specialised hospitals, 976 Community Health Centres (CHCs), 3,757 Primary Health Centres (PHCs) and 27,668 health sub-centres operational across the state.

Officials informed the Chief Minister that government hospitals provided 26.41 crore OPD services and 1.23 crore IPD services during 2025-26, while over 24.33 crore pathology tests were conducted statewide.

Major Growth in Medical Colleges and MBBS Seats

The meeting highlighted the rapid expansion of medical education infrastructure in the state. The number of medical colleges increased from 44 in 2016-17 to 83 by the 2025-26 academic session, registering an 88.6 per cent increase.

Similarly, postgraduate medical seats increased from 1,344 to 5,067, while MBBS seats rose from 5,390 to 12,800. Super-speciality seats also witnessed a growth of nearly 165 per cent.

The government also reviewed the expansion of nursing education. Currently, 652 nursing institutions are operational in the state, with significant growth in ANM, GNM and BSc Nursing seats. Officials said approximately 3.95 lakh registered nursing staff are now available in Uttar Pradesh.

Under ‘Mission Niramaya 1.0’, counselling sessions were conducted in nearly 17,000 schools, reaching more than 3.5 lakh students, while over 10,570 nursing faculty members received specialised training.

Ayushman Bharat, ABHA IDs and Digital Health Expansion

Chief Minister Adityanath said the Ayushman Bharat scheme has emerged as a major support system for poor families. He directed officials to ensure timely settlement of hospital claims under the scheme to maintain better patient services.

Officials informed the meeting that 6,480 hospitals are currently linked with the Ayushman scheme in the state and over 96.75 lakh free treatments have been provided so far.

The Chief Minister also instructed officials to include AYUSH treatment systems such as Ayurveda, Unani and Homoeopathy in the Deendayal Upadhyay Rajya Karmchari Cashless Chikitsa Yojana.

Under the Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission, more than 15.28 crore ABHA IDs have been generated in Uttar Pradesh, while over 15.14 crore electronic health records have already been linked.

Faster Ambulance Services and Better Emergency Care

The state government also reviewed emergency healthcare services and ambulance response systems. Currently, 375 Advanced Life Support (ALS) ambulances are operational across the state and over 9.38 lakh patients have been referred through these services.

The Chief Minister directed officials to further reduce ambulance response time, saying every minute is crucial during medical emergencies. He also instructed timely payments to ambulance operators.

Dialysis facilities are now available in all 75 districts, while CT scan services are operational in 74 districts. By March 2026, over 35.69 lakh dialysis sessions and 45.35 lakh CT scans had been conducted across the state. Tele-radiology services are also operational at 227 CHCs.

Push for Medical Research, Robotic Surgery and New Infrastructure

The Chief Minister stressed the importance of strengthening medical research and innovation through initiatives such as UP-IMRAS, multidisciplinary research units, clinical trial units and MedTech programmes.

Officials informed the meeting that investment proposals worth Rs 1,500 crore have been received for medical research and MedTech sectors in Uttar Pradesh.

Achievements of Dr Ram Manohar Lohia Institute of Medical Sciences, Lucknow, were also highlighted, including more than 376 robotic surgeries and 250 kidney transplants. The state’s first Gamma Knife Centre is also being established at the institute.

Additionally, work is underway on a 500-bed advanced paediatric centre at Sanjay Gandhi Postgraduate Institute of Medical Sciences.

The Chief Minister reviewed several ongoing infrastructure projects, including the multi-storey girls’ hostel at Gorakhpur Medical College, a 110-bed trauma centre at Ayodhya Medical College, the BSc Nursing College at Saharanpur Medical College, and psychiatry and de-addiction ward expansion at Kanpur Medical College.

Focus on Maternal Health and Tuberculosis Elimination

Chief Minister Adityanath directed officials to strengthen communicable disease control campaigns through public awareness, sanitation and timely treatment.

He also emphasised improving institutional deliveries and ensuring timely healthcare access for every pregnant woman to further reduce maternal and infant mortality rates.

The Chief Minister further instructed officials to intensify the tuberculosis eradication campaign and convert it into a mass movement involving schools, colleges and voluntary organisations across the state.
