Doctor Allegedly Conducted Risky Lung Procedure Without Authorization; Police Launch Manhunt

Agartala: In a shocking case of alleged medical negligence, a 25-year-old woman tragically lost her life on Monday after undergoing a risky chest fluid drainage procedure at Janapriya Medical Hall, an unlicensed private clinic in Teliamura, Tripura. The incident has sparked widespread public outrage, political condemnation, and a full-scale police investigation.

Back Pain Turns Fatal After Dubious Procedure

According to local media reports, the woman—a young mother—visited the facility complaining of back pain. She was attended by Dr. Sarkar, who allegedly diagnosed fluid accumulation in her lungs and recommended an urgent extraction, despite the clinic lacking proper medical infrastructure.

Her family paid ₹3,000 for the procedure, after which fluid was reportedly removed using a syringe. Shockingly, no proper post-procedure observation was conducted, and the woman’s health rapidly deteriorated shortly after discharge.

Her husband, an e-rickshaw driver, rushed her to Teliamura Sub-Divisional Hospital, where doctors declared her brought dead.

Public Outcry and Political Reaction

The tragic incident prompted angry protests by local residents, who surrounded the clinic and demanded the arrest of the doctor and closure of the facility. The situation caught the attention of Chief Whip and Teliamura MLA Kalyani Saha Roy, who visited the site and strongly condemned the incident.

“This is murder in the guise of treatment,” Roy said, adding that Dr Sarkar lacked proper authorisation, and the medical hall had no licensed pharmacist. She demanded strict legal action against the doctor and the clinic owner.

Previous Complaints Ignored, Doctor Absconding

Sources told Tripura Info that Dr Sarkar had been operating at the same location for years, despite repeated complaints. The lack of administrative oversight over unauthorised private clinics has come under intense scrutiny following the woman’s death.

Police have confirmed that the doctor is absconding, and his medical qualifications are under verification. An FIR has been registered, and authorities are also investigating the legal status of Janapriya Medical Hall.

The woman’s body has been sent for a post-mortem, which is expected to confirm the cause of death and clarify whether gross medical negligence occurred.

State Promises Stern Action

Authorities, including the health department, have vowed strict punitive action. MLA Roy said,

“The government will not tolerate such illegal and life-threatening medical operations.”

Health activists and residents are now demanding the closure of all unlicensed clinics in the region and stricter monitoring mechanisms to prevent further tragedies.
