Chief Minister Manik Saha to inaugurate NHM-funded hospital aimed at reducing patient burden on GB Pant and IGM Hospitals

In a major boost to public healthcare infrastructure in Tripura, the newly constructed 50-bed Agartala Civil Hospital is set to be inaugurated soon by Chief Minister Shri Manik Saha. The facility has been established to provide quality primary healthcare services to residents of the Agartala Municipal Corporation (AMC) area while reducing the patient load on the state’s two major referral centres—GB Pant Hospital and Indira Gandhi Memorial (IGM) Hospital.

Hospital Ready, Inauguration Awaiting Chief Minister’s Schedule

Health and Family Welfare Secretary Kiran Gitte said the hospital’s infrastructure has been completed, with only minor finishing work remaining before its formal inauguration.

He stated that the Chief Minister has decided to dedicate the hospital to the people of the AMC area, and the inauguration will take place once his schedule is finalised.

Project Developed to Reduce Overcrowding at Referral Hospitals

During a recent inspection of the facility, Agartala Municipal Corporation (AMC) Mayor and MLA Dipak Majumder said the hospital was conceived in line with Chief Minister Manik Saha’s vision of establishing a municipally managed healthcare facility to strengthen primary healthcare services.

He said the project is expected to significantly reduce overcrowding at GB Pant Hospital and IGM Hospital, allowing these institutions to focus on secondary, tertiary and specialised medical care.

The inspection was attended by senior officials, including the Health Secretary, AMC Commissioner, Central Zone Chairman and representatives of the Health Department.

NHM-Funded Hospital Built on Urban Polyclinic Model

The hospital has been developed with financial assistance from the National Health Mission (NHM) and has been designed on the urban polyclinic model to improve access to comprehensive primary healthcare services.

According to Health Secretary Kiran Gitte, the hospital will function under the administrative supervision of the Medical Superintendent of IGM Hospital.

Seven Doctors Posted Ahead of Launch

The state government has already deployed seven doctors, along with the required paramedical and support staff, ensuring that healthcare services can begin immediately after the hospital is inaugurated.

Modern Infrastructure to Support Quality Healthcare

The newly established Agartala Civil Hospital has been equipped with several modern healthcare facilities, including:

  • Oxygen generation plant
  • Effluent Treatment Plant (ETP)
  • Uninterrupted power backup
  • Elevators
  • Adequate parking facilities
  • Water supply infrastructure
  • Dedicated emergency triage area

These facilities are expected to improve emergency preparedness and ensure uninterrupted patient care.

Strengthening Primary Healthcare Network

Officials said the new hospital will encourage residents requiring primary healthcare services to seek treatment at Urban Primary Health Centres and the Agartala Civil Hospital, thereby reducing unnecessary referrals to higher-level hospitals.

The development comes shortly after the Tripura Government prohibited private practice by faculty members and medical officers of GB Pant Hospital and Agartala Government Medical College, as part of broader efforts to strengthen the state’s public healthcare system and improve the availability of doctors in government hospitals.
