Agartala: A female doctor in Tripura has filed a complaint with the state women’s commission, accusing her husband, an IAS officer, of domestic violence and dowry harassment. The doctor alleges that her husband beat her, resulting in a fractured hand, after she refused to meet his dowry demands.
The incident has gained media attention after the doctor claimed that local police did not act on her complaint, prompting her to contact the women’s commission. She has threatened to approach the National Commission for Women if no action is taken.
According to the doctor, her husband and his family repeatedly pressured her for more dowry, despite her father having provided significant cash and gold at the time of their marriage. The couple married in March 2022, with the IAS officer currently serving as the Additional District Magistrate in Belonia, Tamil Nadu.
The alleged assault took place on January 8, when the doctor and her father attempted to enter the IAS officer’s residence to resolve ongoing dowry disputes. During the confrontation, the doctor claims her husband used abusive language and broke her hand. She received initial treatment at Belonia Hospital and further care at GBP Hospital in Agartala.
After the assault, the doctor sought to file a complaint at Belonia police station, but her case was reportedly not registered. Frustrated with the lack of action, she has filed complaints with the state women’s commission and a Kerala court for domestic violence. She has also submitted letters to the chief secretary and the DGP, but no action has been taken against the accused IAS officer yet.
