Agartala : Authorities in Tripura have registered a case against a doctor and 17 other individuals for allegedly blocking National Highway 8 near the 82 Mile Bazar Kalabari Tri-Junction in Dhalai district, disrupting traffic and posing risks to public safety.

The incident occurred around 9:50 a.m. on May 21, when local residents, including women, staged a road blockade under the jurisdiction of Manpur Police Station in protest against the transfer of Dr. Akash Bhowmik, a physician serving at the 28-Mile Primary Health Centre (PHC).

While police eventually dispersed the protesters and cleared the highway, a formal case has now been filed. The doctor himself has been named among the 18 accused, allegedly for participating in or inciting the protest.

According to reports, the case has been registered under Section 8(B) of the National Highway Act, 1956, and Sections 126(1) and 61(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).

Officials from the Tripura Police confirmed that an investigation is underway to determine each individual’s role in the blockade and to initiate legal proceedings accordingly.

The protest not only hampered normal traffic but also raised concerns regarding emergency vehicle access and public safety, prompting swift administrative and legal action.
