Thoothukudi, A doctor at the Government Thoothukudi Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) has been suspended after a video surfaced showing him allegedly intoxicated while on duty in the Outpatient Department (OPD).

The incident occurred on Thursday morning, when a member of the public noticed the doctor’s behavior, recorded a video, and shared it on social media, prompting immediate administrative action.


Official Response & Disciplinary Action

  • Following the viral video, the hospital administration issued a notice to the doctor seeking an explanation.
  • An internal inquiry was initiated to verify the incident.
  • Based on the inquiry report, Director of Medical Education J. Sangumani ordered the doctor’s suspension on Friday.
  • The action was confirmed by Resident Medical Officer Dr. Silas Jeyamani.

Broader Concerns Raised

The incident has triggered public concern over the conduct and accountability of healthcare professionals, especially in government institutions that already face resource constraints and staffing issues.

This comes amid recent controversies involving alleged medical negligence at the same hospital. In a separate incident, a 30-year-old pregnant woman died during labor after being referred from Pudukottai PHC to GMCH, leading to public protests and demands for accountability.
