New Delhi – Mission Poshan 2.0 represents a strategic shift in India’s nutrition governance, transitioning from a welfare-centric model to a national priority focused on human capital development. Launched in 2021 by consolidating several existing schemes, this integrated nutrition support programme now tracks nearly 9 crore beneficiaries across 14 lakh Anganwadi Centres using the near real-time Poshan Tracker application.

Technological and Lifecycle Approach

The mission prioritises a preventive, lifecycle-based strategy, placing significant emphasis on the first 1,000 days of life—critical for optimal brain and physical development.

  • Digital Governance: In April 2026, an IT-enabled Home Visit Scheduler was integrated into the Poshan Tracker to automate visits for pregnant women and infants, ensuring early detection of developmental delays.
  • Integrated Infrastructure: The Saksham Anganwadi initiative aims to upgrade 2 lakh centres with modern amenities, including LED screens, smart learning aids, and Poshan Vatikas (nutri-gardens).
  • Capacity Building: As of March 2026, over 10.5 lakh Anganwadi workers have completed training in early childhood education pedagogy.

Jan Andolan: The People’s Movement

A key pillar of Mission Poshan 2.0 is community mobilisation through “Jan Andolan”.

  • Poshan Pakhwada 2026: The 8th edition, held from 9 to 23 April 2026, focused on the theme “Maximising Brain Development in the First Six Years of Life”.
  • Behavioural Change: Initiatives like Poshan Maah and community-based events have generated over 150 crore activities since 2018, promoting dietary diversity, exclusive breastfeeding, and the use of millets

Strengthening Service Delivery

The mission operates through three primary verticals: Nutrition Support, Early Childhood Care and Education (ECCE), and Anganwadi Infrastructure. To improve outcomes, updated nutrition norms revised in January 2023 now emphasise balanced diets rich in proteins and essential micronutrients like Iron, Folic Acid, and Vitamin B-12. Additionally, the government has provided over 28,000 smartphones and growth monitoring devices to frontline workers to ensure precision in tracking stunting and wasting.
