Thane: The Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) has issued a closure notice to a hospital run by a gynaecologist found guilty of medical negligence in the 2022 death of a 35-year-old woman. The decision follows a medical inquiry committee’s findings, which held the doctor responsible for failing to provide timely treatment and personal supervision.

Hospital Ordered to Cease Operations

The civic body has directed the immediate transfer of all existing patients to other hospitals and warned that failure to comply would result in the hospital being sealed.

Case Details: Delay in Treatment Led to Fatal Infection

The incident occurred on October 9, 2022, when the patient, Patil, was admitted to the hospital due to fluid loss during pregnancy. Allegedly, doctors delayed treatment, causing the unborn child to die in the uterus. The further delay in removing the fetus led to a severe infection, which rapidly spread and resulted in multiple organ complications.

She was later transferred to Jupiter Hospital for an abortion procedure, but by then, the infection had severely affected her kidneys, leading to organ failure. On October 12, 2022, she was declared dead.

Doctor Challenges Closure Notice

The accused gynaecologist has filed an appeal with the health ministry at Aarogya Bhavan, arguing that under the Bombay Nursing Home Act, there is no provision to shut down a hospital in a medico-legal case.

Legal Battle Continues

Advocate Mohammad Shine, representing the victim’s family, welcomed the TMC’s action but emphasized that the fight for justice is ongoing. Cases against the hospital remain under consideration before the District Consumer Commission and the Human Rights Commission.
