Siddipet: In a tragic incident, a female house surgeon from the 2020 batch at the Government General Hospital (GGH), Siddipet, allegedly died by suicide after reportedly injecting herself with 10–15 ml of paraquat, a highly toxic substance.
Stress Linked to Internship and NEET-PG Preparation
According to information circulating on social media, the young doctor was reportedly under severe stress due to the pressure of NEET-PG preparation alongside her internship duties. However, officials have clarified that the exact reason behind the incident is yet to be ascertained and is currently under investigation.
Incident During Labour Room Duty
The incident reportedly occurred while the doctor was on Labour Room (LR) duty on Friday. After feeling unwell, she initially received treatment at the hospital’s casualty department. On Saturday morning, it was reported that she had allegedly administered the injection herself.
Intensive Treatment Fails to Save Her
She was immediately rushed to the casualty at GGH Siddipet and later shifted to a private hospital for advanced care. Subsequently, she was referred to NIMS, Hyderabad. Despite aggressive medical management, including intubation and cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), doctors were unable to revive her. She was declared dead at around 1:30 am on January 4, 2025.
Police Investigation and Calls for Mental Health Support
Her body has been shifted to Gandhi General Hospital for postmortem examination, and police have registered a case. Further details are expected after a thorough probe. Expressing grief, Telangana Med Wing stated on social media platform X that the incident highlights the urgent need to prioritise doctors’ mental health and ensure humane working conditions, while extending condolences to the bereaved family.
