Coimbatore: The Tamil Nadu Health Department has announced plans to extend its colorectal cancer screening program to private hospitals in the Coimbatore district. This decision follows the successful integration of all government hospitals in the district and aims to improve patient monitoring and treatment across both public and private healthcare facilities.
Part of a Broader Health Initiative
The screening initiative forms part of the four-year Prevention and Control of Non-Communicable Diseases project (2022-2026), a collaboration between the Tamil Nadu Health and Family Welfare Department and the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA). The project focuses on strengthening early diagnosis systems for non-communicable diseases, with a particular emphasis on cancer detection.
Coimbatore Selected for Targeted Screening
Coimbatore district was chosen for focused colorectal cancer screening based on findings from a 2018 survey. A pilot project was launched in 2024, targeting both urban and rural populations to ensure comprehensive coverage.
Pilot Project Rollout
Initially, screening and awareness campaigns were conducted at 21 primary health centres and two government hospitals in Pollachi and Thondamuthur, along with the Coimbatore Medical College Hospital. Medical officers and nursing staff received specialized training in colorectal cancer screening, enabling them to train field staff for grassroots-level screening.
Expansion After Successful Pilot
The pilot’s success prompted the expansion of the program to 18 additional primary health centres and 11 more government hospitals across the district. The initiative focuses on sensitizing healthcare workers and the public about the risks, symptoms, and early detection of colorectal cancer.
Engaging Private Hospitals
The next phase of the program involves partnering with private hospitals, particularly those offering gastroenterology services. Officials highlighted that this collaboration would help obtain accurate patient data, track treatments effectively, and provide support to ensure patients complete their therapy. Currently, over ten private hospitals in Coimbatore offer gastroenterology treatment.
Addressing Awareness Gaps
Health officials emphasized the challenges in diagnosing colorectal cancer, noting that its symptoms, such as changes in bowel habits, are often vague and ignored by patients. The program aims to raise awareness among the public and healthcare workers about early warning signs.
Focus on Early Diagnosis and Treatment
“The primary objective is to identify colorectal cancer cases early and provide timely medical intervention,” officials said. With the inclusion of private hospitals, the department aims to enhance patient care and improve overall outcomes in the fight against colorectal cancer.
