Raipur: A Milestone for Central India’s Medical Education
Raipur: The Pt. Jawaharlal Nehru Memorial (Pt. JNM) Medical College in Raipur has achieved a significant milestone by receiving approval to start a super-specialisation course in MCh (Surgical Oncology). With this, Pt. JNM Medical College becomes the first government medical institute in Central India to offer the advanced course in Surgical Oncology under its Regional Cancer Institute.
Approval from the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare
The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India, issued a formal directive to the National Medical Commission (NMC), granting a Letter of Permission (LoP) for three seats in the MCh Surgical Oncology course. This course is scheduled to begin from the current academic session.
Current Cancer Education Landscape
The cancer department at Pt. JNM Medical College already runs six recognised postgraduate seats for the MD (Radiotherapy) course. With the addition of this new MCh course, the institute is expanding its cancer education and care programs.
Course Launch and Institutional Efforts
The application for the MCh course was submitted early last year, but the NMC initially raised concerns, delaying the approval. After addressing the deficiencies and a personal intervention by Dr. Ashutosh Gupta, Professor of Surgical Oncology, the NMC was convinced and granted permission for the course.
Significance of the New Course
Dr. Vivek Choudhary, Dean of the Medical College, played a pivotal role in developing the Cancer Department into a Regional Cancer Center, which paved the way for the MCh course’s launch.
Dr. Gupta expressed that with this course, cancer surgery facilities will improve, there will be a boost in the number of super-specialists in Surgical Oncology in the state, and the course will provide new opportunities for medical postgraduate students.
This development is a significant boost for cancer treatment in Central India and an important step in advancing the region’s medical education infrastructure.
