Solapur, April 19 – In a heartbreaking incident, renowned neurologist Dr. Shirish Padmakar Valsangkar, founder of S.P. Institute of Neurosciences (Valsangkar Hospital) in Solapur, died by suicide at his residence on Thursday night. He reportedly shot himself in the head with his licensed revolver.
Dr. Valsangkar, a pioneer in neurology in South-West Maharashtra and widely known for his contributions to advanced brain and spine care, was rushed to his own hospital by his family. Despite immediate efforts, including treatment administered by his son, also a doctor, he succumbed to his injuries around 9:30 p.m.
Shocking End to a Celebrated Life
The incident took place shortly after the doctor had dinner with his family. Around 8:30 p.m., he excused himself to the bathroom, where he allegedly used his licensed revolver to take his life.
According to preliminary police findings, Dr. Valsangkar had been under significant stress in recent days. The exact reason behind his suicide is still unknown. A police officer told PTI, “While the exact reason behind his extreme step is being ascertained, preliminary information suggests he had been under stress.” The body has been sent for post-mortem examination as part of the ongoing investigation.
The news sent shockwaves through the medical fraternity. Scores of doctors, colleagues, and patients rushed to his hospital to pay their last respects. Dr. Sachin Baldawa, a leading neurosurgeon in Solapur, said, “It is a shocking development for all of us.”
A Pioneer in Neurology
Dr. Valsangkar was the first neurologist in Solapur, and his name became synonymous with cutting-edge neurological care in the region. An alumnus of Dr. V. M. Medical College, Solapur, he went on to earn his MRCP (UK) from the Royal College of Physicians, London.
His extensive training included clinical experience at prestigious institutions in both India and the UK, including Maida Vale Neurological Hospital in London and Bombay Hospital. In 1999, he founded the SP Institute of Neurosciences, one of the region’s most advanced centers for treating brain and spine disorders.
The institute grew under his leadership to offer services in neurology, neurosurgery, neurointervention, pain management, and neurorehabilitation. He was especially noted for his expertise in managing epilepsy, stroke, neuromuscular diseases, and movement disorders.
Legacy of Excellence
Dr. Valsangkar was also a dedicated researcher and academician, having authored several papers in neurology, including on cerebrospinal fluid LDH levels in meningitis, and stroke and epilepsy treatment protocols.
His commitment to serving patients went far beyond Solapur, with people from across Maharashtra and other parts of India seeking his expertise.
