Thiruvananthapuram: The State Human Rights Commission (SHRC) has directed the Medical Council Registrar to initiate criminal proceedings against Robin Gurusingh, an individual accused of practicing as a fake doctor without a medical degree.

SHRC Questions Delay in Action

SHRC Chairperson Justice Alexander Thomas has questioned why the 2021 order to take legal action against the accused under the Kerala Medical Practitioners Act, 2021 was not followed. The registrar has been given one month to provide an explanation.

The commission has ordered action under Sections 40, 41, 42, and 43 of the Act, which deal with fraudulent medical practice, false representation as a doctor, and endangering public health.

Complaint and Investigation Findings

The case came to light after a complaint was filed by A. Sreekumar, who alleged that Robin Gurusingh had put up an advertisement board at Chackai (Thiruvananthapuram), falsely claiming to be a doctor.

An investigation by the Medical Council revealed that Gurusingh was not registered as a doctor in Kerala or Tamil Nadu. Despite earlier action, including the removal of his advertisement board, the accused continued his fraudulent activities. He even published a newspaper ad claiming to be a spine specialist.

Legal Action and Future Steps

Following the SHRC order, the district police chief was instructed to take strict legal action against Gurusingh. If found guilty, he could face criminal charges, fines, and imprisonment under the Kerala Medical Practitioners Act.

The case has raised concerns over the rise of fake doctors and the urgent need for stricter enforcement against unqualified medical practitioners.
