Associate Professor Dr. Kuldeep Kumar injured in attack after confronting trespassers drinking on hospital premises

New Delhi: In a disturbing incident that has sparked serious concerns over the safety of medical professionals, Dr. Kuldeep Kumar, an Associate Professor in the Department of Medicine and Hostel Warden at Guru Teg Bahadur (GTB) Hospital, was assaulted on Friday night by three unidentified individuals inside the hospital campus.

The incident occurred around 9 PM near Gate 12 of the GTB Hospital campus. According to officials, Dr. Kumar was on a routine inspection round when he noticed three individuals consuming alcohol openly within the premises. When he, along with several Resident Welfare Association (RWA) members, confronted the men and objected to their presence, a heated altercation ensued.

One of the assailants struck Dr. Kumar with a liquor bottle, causing a laceration on his forehead. He was immediately rushed to the casualty department for treatment. His condition is reported to be stable.

Police confirmed that all three accused have been arrested and are in custody. “The three men had come on two motorcycles to visit a patient and were trying to exit through the residential colony gate when they were stopped by RWA members,” said Deputy Commissioner of Police (Shahdara), Prashant Gautam. He added that one of the attackers was previously a resident of the colony.

Dr. Rajat Sharma, President of the Resident Doctors Association (RDA) at the University College of Medical Sciences and GTB Hospital, said that the police were promptly informed and acted swiftly to apprehend the accused. “Dr. Kuldeep is stable now. But this incident highlights a grave security lapse,” he stated.

RDA Vice-President Dr. Nischal Yathagiri called the attack “a serious threat to all healthcare workers on campus,” and emphasized that both the Teachers’ Association and RDA are closely monitoring the situation. Further actions and decisions are expected following a scheduled meeting with the Medical Superintendent of GTB Hospital.

Police officials have assured that a detailed investigation is underway, and appropriate legal action will be taken based on the findings.
