Kolkata: On Friday, the Sealdah court in Kolkata granted bail to Sandip Ghosh, the former principal of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, and Abhijit Mondal, the former officer-in-charge of Tala police station, in connection with the rape and murder case of a female trainee doctor on August 9.

Mondal faces allegations of delaying the filing of the FIR in the case, while Ghosh is accused of tampering with evidence. Both were arrested by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), which is probing the case under the direction of the Calcutta High Court.

According to a report by PTI, the additional chief judicial magistrate (ACJM) of Sealdah court granted bail to the accused as the chargesheet against them was not filed within the mandatory 90-day period, as confirmed by Ghosh’s lawyer.

Mondal’s lawyer stated that he would be released from judicial remand and walk out of the correctional home, while Ghosh, who is already on judicial remand in another case involving alleged financial irregularities at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, will remain in custody despite being granted bail in the rape and murder case.

Earlier, it was reported that the trial in the rape and murder case of the postgraduate doctor trainee at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata was expected to conclude in a month. The Supreme Court, after reviewing the CBI’s progress report, noted that the trial was proceeding daily from Monday to Thursday in the Special CBI Court in Sealdah.
