Dr. K. Pavithran, a highly respected medical oncologist and long-serving faculty member at Amrita Hospital, passed away at the age of 63 while undergoing treatment for an abdominal-related ailment, marking a profound loss to India’s medical community.

A Lifetime Dedicated to Cancer Care and Healing

Dr. Pavithran served as Professor and Head of the Department of Medical Oncology at Amrita Hospital for over two decades. With a career spanning more than 34 years, he became a cornerstone of oncology services, known for his commitment to patient care—even continuing to attend to patients during his illness.

Distinguished Academic and Global Training Background

He completed his MBBS and MD in Internal Medicine from Calicut Medical College, followed by a DM in Medical Oncology from Kidwai Memorial Institute of Oncology.

His pursuit of advanced medical knowledge took him abroad, where he trained in haematology at Royal Hallamshire Hospital and gained expertise in bone marrow transplantation at Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center.

Expertise Across Multiple Cancer Specialties

Dr. Pavithran brought decades of experience in haematology and oncology, treating a wide range of cancers including breast, lung, gastrointestinal, and gynaecological cancers. He was also known for his work in lymphoma, multiple myeloma, pediatric oncology, and bone marrow transplantation.

Prolific Researcher and Esteemed Teacher

Beyond clinical excellence, he was a passionate educator and researcher. He authored more than 300 scientific papers, contributed to 35 book chapters, and edited two books on cancer. His work was widely presented at national and international medical conferences.

Honours and Recognitions

His contributions earned him several prestigious accolades, including the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Indian Society of Medical and Pediatric Oncology in 2023. He also received recognition from the Cochin Oncology Group and fellowships from the Royal College of Physicians, the Indian College of Physicians, and the World Federation of Hemophilia.

Tributes Pour In From Medical Fraternity

At the public darshan held at Amrita Hospital, prayers were led by Swami Poornamritananda Puri. Amrita Hospitals Group Medical Director Dr. Prem Nair paid tribute, calling his demise an “irreparable loss” to both the institution and the broader medical field.

Final Rites and Surviving Family

Dr. Pavithran is survived by his wife, who heads the Pathology Department at the same hospital, and their children. His funeral is scheduled to take place on Wednesday at 10 a.m. at the public crematorium in Edappally, where family, colleagues, and well-wishers are expected to gather to pay their last respects.
