Patient injured as glass shatters during altercation at Government Mata Kaushalya Hospital in Patiala
Patiala: In a strong response to a viral incident, Punjab Health Minister Dr Balbir Singh has ordered the dismissal of a contractual employee at Government Mata Kaushalya Hospital after a video surfaced showing him allegedly behaving violently towards a patient.
Viral Video Sparks Outrage
The incident, which took place at the hospital’s OPD registration counter, came to public attention after a video began circulating widely on social media platforms like X and WhatsApp. The footage reportedly shows the employee striking a glass partition during a dispute, causing it to shatter.
As a result, a female patient standing nearby sustained injuries from the broken glass, triggering widespread anger and concern over patient safety in government healthcare facilities.
Immediate Administrative Action
Taking serious note of the incident, Health Minister Dr Balbir Singh conducted a surprise visit to the hospital. After reviewing the video evidence and inspecting the site, he ordered immediate action against the कर्मचारी.
According to officials, the employee has been suspended with immediate effect and served a one-month notice period, after which his services will be permanently terminated.
“The behaviour captured in that video is unacceptable. We cannot allow those who are supposed to help the sick to become a source of injury,” the minister stated.
No Prior Complaints, Yet Swift Action
Interestingly, the contractual employee, who had been working at the hospital since 2021, reportedly had no prior complaints regarding his conduct. However, the severity of the incident prompted swift disciplinary action.
Departmental Probe Ordered
Authorities have also initiated a departmental inquiry to investigate whether any other staff members or systemic lapses contributed to the escalation of the incident. The probe aims to ensure accountability and prevent similar occurrences in the future.
Growing Concerns Over Hospital Safety
The episode has reignited concerns about safety standards and staff behaviour in public healthcare institutions. With increasing reliance on government hospitals, ensuring patient safety and maintaining professional conduct among staff remains a critical priority for authorities.
