MMC Imposes Three-Year Ban After Evidence of Insurance Fraud and Non-Compliance
Pune, Maharashtra – The Maharashtra Medical Council (MMC) has revoked the medical registration of Dr. Sireesha Mohan, a Pune-based doctor, for three years after uncovering her involvement in insurance fraud and unethical medical practices. Announced on December 27, the action comes amid heightened scrutiny of malpractice in the medical profession across the state.
Fraudulent Practices and Ethical Breaches
Dr. Mohan was found guilty of continuing to sign pathology reports despite serving a prior suspension and engaging in fraudulent activities linked to insurance claims. Allegations brought forward by the Maharashtra Association of Practicing Pathologists and Microbiologists (MAPPM) revealed her involvement with multiple pathology laboratories, some far from her residence, raising questions about her ability to manage such work legitimately.
MAPPM’s state president, Dr. Sundeep Yadav, detailed the irregularities, stating that Dr. Mohan’s name and signature were frequently used on insurance claim reports, suggesting systemic malpractice. Complaints date back to 2019 when Dr. Prasad Kulkarni, a MAPPM member, and a private insurance fraud detection agency exposed her activities.
Previous Disciplinary Actions Ignored
In December 2020, Dr. Mohan’s license was initially suspended following multiple complaints and notices, but she failed to comply with MMC directives. Further investigations in 2021 led to a six-month suspension. However, she continued her unethical practices, signing pathology reports during her suspension.
“Her non-compliance and repeated violations of ethical norms compelled us to take strict action,” said MMC president Dr. Vinky Rughwani.
Final Revocation and Warning
On December 27, the MMC officially canceled her registration for three years and notified the National Medical Commission (NMC) and state health officials. Dr. Rughwani stated, “She is prohibited from practicing medicine. If found doing so, criminal action will be initiated against her.”
Dr. Mohan’s failure to renew her medical registration since 2012 and her disregard for council hearings further reinforced the MMC’s decision.
Message to the Medical Community
“This decision sends a strong message that unethical practices and non-compliance will not be tolerated. The MMC is committed to upholding medical ethics,” added Dr. Rughwani.
The council’s actions aim to deter malpractice and restore trust in the medical profession.
