Pune: The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) is planning to upgrade nine civic hospitals to strengthen maternal and specialised healthcare services by adding facilities such as modular operation theatres (OTs), intensive care units (ICUs) and neonatal intensive care units (NICUs).
The initiative is aimed at improving access to specialised and critical care within civic hospitals and reducing the need to refer patients to private and tertiary-care facilities. To address the shortage of specialist doctors, the PMC also plans to appoint 38 specialists on a contractual basis under its Health Department.
Nine Civic Hospitals Identified for Upgrade
The hospitals identified for the proposed upgrade are:
- Late Sanjay Gandhi Hospital, Bopodi
- Bharat Ratna Rajiv Gandhi Hospital, Yerawada
- Late Shriramrao Yadav Hospital, Aundh
- Dr Kashinath Anaji Dhanawade Maternity Home, Balajinagar
- Kamla Nehru Hospital, Mangalwar Peth
- Rajmata Jijau Maternity Home, Bibwewadi
- Jayabai Nanasaheb Sutar Maternity Home, Kothrud
- Savitribai Phule Maternity Home, Mundhwa
- Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar Maternity Home, Bopodi
The proposal focuses on developing accessible maternity services with modern labour rooms and women-oriented infrastructure.
Modular OTs and Modern Labour Rooms Planned
Under the proposed plan, the facilities will be revamped with high-tech modular OTs equipped with modern surgical equipment and infection-control systems.
The upgraded infrastructure will also include modern HVAC systems, structured labour rooms, improved facilities for women and an Advanced Integrated Ward Management System.
According to PMC Chief Health Officer Dr Nina Borade, the modular OTs will use specialised panels, ceiling and flooring systems and advanced ventilation to maintain sterile environments.
The hospitals will also receive central medical gas pipelines and modern HVAC systems aimed at supporting infection control and electrical safety.
Labour rooms are proposed to have smart displays, air-shower facilities and biomedical waste management systems, while women’s wards will feature modular partitions and antimicrobial painting.
ICU and NICU Facilities to Strengthen Critical Care
A 10-bed ICU with critical-care equipment is proposed at Late Sanjay Gandhi Hospital in Bopodi.
Kamla Nehru Hospital is likely to receive a 10-bed NICU equipped with 10 neonatal ventilators and 10 CPAP machines to provide respiratory support to critically ill and premature newborns.
The proposed critical-care facilities are expected to strengthen treatment capacity for patients requiring immediate specialised care and reduce referrals to tertiary-care hospitals.
PMC to Appoint 38 Specialist Doctors
The PMC plans to appoint 38 specialist doctors on a contractual basis across seven specialities under its Health Department.
According to PMC Additional Municipal Commissioner (General) Pavneet Kaur, the positions will include gynaecologists, paediatricians, neonatologists, physicians, intensivists, dermatologists and radiologists.
PMC Assistant Health Chief Dr Suryakant Devkar said the proposed upgrades would improve specialised and critical care services. He said the proposed ICU and NICU facilities would be particularly important for patients requiring immediate and specialised treatment.
Advanced Ward Management System Proposed
The civic body also plans to introduce an Advanced Integrated Ward Management System to improve administrative and clinical operations at the upgraded facilities.
The proposed combination of upgraded infrastructure, critical-care facilities and specialist staffing is intended to expand the capacity of civic hospitals and reduce pressure on private and tertiary-care hospitals.
