Final Report Expected in Two Months

Kochi: The investigation into the alleged caste-based insult of a pharmacist by a doctor at Kakkanad District Jail is in its final stage, with the report likely to be submitted to court within two months, Thrikkakara Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Baby P V informed the State Human Rights Commission (SHRC).

Complaint and FIR Registered

The case began after a pharmacist, belonging to a backward community, alleged that the jail doctor insulted her with a caste-based slur and issued threats. Following her complaint to Infopark Police, a First Information Report (FIR) under Crime No. 82/2025 was registered.

Action by Authorities

Kakkanad Jail Superintendent informed SHRC Chairperson Justice Alexander Thomas that both the doctor and the complainant pharmacist, employees of the state health department, have since been transferred out of the jail. Justice Thomas observed that no additional action was needed from the SHRC, as the government had already initiated departmental proceedings.

Allegations Found True

According to a report cited by TOI, the superintendent confirmed that the allegation was found to be true. The district police chief also informed the commission that Thrikkakara ACP was assigned to head the investigation.

Wider Concerns on Caste Bias in Healthcare

This case comes amid increasing concerns over caste-based discrimination in medical settings. The Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment (MoSJE) recently urged the Union Health Ministry to intervene in cases involving excessive duty hours for resident doctors and alleged caste bias faced by postgraduate medical students from marginalised communities, including SC, ST, OBC, EWS, and PwDs.
