Resident Doctor Arrested After Doctors-Lawyers Clash; Medical Fraternity Questions Due Process

A fresh controversy has erupted in Uttar Pradesh after the arrest of a resident doctor from Swaroop Rani Nehru (SRN) Hospital, affiliated with Moti Lal Nehru Medical College in Prayagraj. The arrest, linked to the recent violent clash between doctors and lawyers, has triggered strong protests from medical associations across the country. Doctors’ bodies have appealed to Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath and approached the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), alleging violations of due process and breach of administrative assurances.

Medical Associations Allege Breach of Trust

The Federation of All India Medical Association (FAIMA) has expressed serious concern over the arrest, stating that resident doctors had resumed work only after district authorities assured them that no punitive or coercive action would be taken against junior doctors involved in the dispute.

According to FAIMA National Vice President Dr. Lakshya Jha, confusion initially surrounded the doctor’s whereabouts, with police reportedly denying any arrest. The association later confirmed through district officials that the doctor had indeed been taken into custody.

FAIMA has written to Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, arguing that the arrest undermines trust between healthcare professionals and the administration and creates fear among resident doctors across the country.

NHRC Petition Filed Over Alleged Illegal Detention

The Federation of Resident Doctors Association (FORDA) has formally approached the NHRC, describing the incident as an “illegal detention” and demanding urgent intervention.

In its complaint, FORDA alleged that the postgraduate resident doctor was taken from his residence in Rampur by individuals in plain clothes, believed to be police personnel, without a warrant or clear explanation. The association further claimed that family members, including women, were intimidated and manhandled while seeking information about the doctor’s whereabouts.

FORDA has urged the human rights body to seek an immediate report from the Uttar Pradesh Police and district authorities, ensure the doctor’s access to legal counsel and family members, and investigate whether legal procedures were followed during the arrest.

Background: Violent Doctors-Lawyers Clash in Prayagraj

The controversy stems from a violent confrontation that took place on May 20 at SRN Hospital in Prayagraj. Lawyers alleged that doctors assaulted them after an argument over delays in patient treatment. Doctors, however, denied the allegations and claimed that a female resident doctor was attacked while hospital property was vandalised by a group of lawyers.

Following the incident, authorities constituted a three-member inquiry committee and suspended nearly 20 doctors who were on duty at the time. Resident doctors subsequently launched a strike, which was later withdrawn after administrative assurances that no disciplinary action would be taken while the inquiry was underway.

Doctors Claim Resident Was Picked Up Without Transparency

Medical associations have questioned the manner in which the doctor was detained. According to statements submitted to NHRC, the doctor’s family alleges that unidentified individuals arrived at the residence in civilian clothing and took him away without presenting official documentation.

The family further claimed that firearms were displayed during the incident and that the doctor’s mother and pregnant sister were physically manhandled while trying to intervene. These allegations have intensified demands for an independent investigation into the circumstances surrounding the arrest.

Medical Community Demands Fair and Transparent Investigation

Doctors’ organisations including FAIMA, FORDA and the United Doctors Front (UDF) have called for a transparent, impartial and evidence-based investigation into the entire episode.

The associations argue that while any inquiry should proceed according to law, healthcare workers must be afforded the same constitutional protections and due process rights as any other citizen. They have also sought official clarification regarding the charges against the doctor, the legal provisions invoked, and the procedural safeguards followed during the arrest.

Growing Concern Across Healthcare Sector

The incident has sparked widespread concern within India’s medical community, with doctors warning that actions perceived as arbitrary or inconsistent with prior assurances could damage trust between healthcare professionals and public authorities.

Medical associations maintain that restoring confidence among resident doctors will require transparency from the administration, adherence to legal procedures and a fair resolution of the ongoing investigation into the Prayagraj doctors-lawyers clash.
