Ayurveda and Holistic Healthcare Gain Attention During Gothenburg Visit
Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Sweden on May 17, 2026, has intensified global discussions around Ayurveda and holistic healthcare cooperation between India and Nordic countries. During the visit to Gothenburg, high-level talks focused on trade, innovation, strategic partnerships, healthcare research, and emerging technologies, while also opening new opportunities for collaboration in traditional medicine and preventive healthcare systems.
Sweden Sees Growing Interest in Ayurveda and Preventive Healthcare
Ayurveda Sweden Association (ASA) Chairperson Stina Andersson described the visit as a significant opportunity to promote Ayurveda across Sweden and Europe. She said stronger India-Sweden ties could help integrate Ayurveda into mainstream conversations on wellness, preventive healthcare, and healthy living.
According to Andersson, Sweden’s increasing interest in traditional Indian medicine reflects changing global healthcare priorities, where people are focusing more on natural healing systems, stress management, and lifestyle-based disease prevention.
Opportunities for Indian Ayurvedic Experts in Sweden
The ASA chief stated that deeper cooperation between the two countries could create opportunities for Indian Ayurvedic doctors, wellness experts, and therapists to collaborate with Swedish healthcare institutions and research organisations.
She also noted that Swedish citizens are increasingly interested in learning Ayurveda, yoga, and holistic healing practices in India. Andersson said bilateral healthcare cooperation can improve awareness and understanding of traditional medical systems among European populations.
Ayurveda’s Role in Tackling Lifestyle Diseases Highlighted
Stina Andersson highlighted Ayurveda’s growing relevance in addressing lifestyle-related illnesses such as stress, obesity, and chronic disorders. She explained that Ayurveda promotes preventive healthcare through balanced nutrition, healthy routines, and natural healing practices.
She further suggested integrating Ayurveda with advanced technologies like artificial intelligence and nanotechnology to improve healthcare accessibility and efficiency in the future.
Swedish Delegation Earlier Visited National Institute of Ayurveda
Interest in Ayurveda has been steadily increasing in Sweden and several European countries. Earlier this year, a Swedish delegation visited the National Institute of Ayurveda in Panchkula to study Ayurvedic treatment systems, patient care practices, and educational programmes.
The visit reflected rising international curiosity about India’s traditional healthcare methods and their role in complementary medicine and wellness-based healthcare systems.
Modi and Kristersson Discuss Strategic Healthcare Partnerships
During bilateral discussions, Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson and Prime Minister Narendra Modi discussed strengthening India-Sweden relations through strategic partnerships and expanding cooperation in healthcare, research, innovation, and emerging technologies.
The discussions are being viewed as an important step towards expanding global recognition of Ayurveda and increasing collaboration between India and European nations in holistic and preventive healthcare sectors.
