Jalandhar: Despite the Punjab government’s claims of improving medical infrastructure and offering free tests and medicines, Phagwara Civil Hospital is struggling with a severe staff shortage and lack of essential medical equipment.

Key Issues at Phagwara Civil Hospital

  • Severe Staff Shortages:
    • Of 119 sanctioned posts, 61 remain vacant for medical and para-medical staff.
    • 14 out of 31 medical officer positions are unfilled.
    • 12 out of 24 sanctioned nurse posts remain vacant.
  • Lack of Specialists:
    • No radiologist, anesthetist, skin specialist, or dental surgeon available.
  • Non-Functional Blood Bank:
    • The hospital’s blood bank has been closed for two years, affecting emergency care.
  • Essential Equipment Missing:
    • The eye department lacks a Tonometer, crucial for treating glaucoma patients.

Impact on Patient Care

Phagwara Civil Hospital, a 140-bed facility, serves around 450 patients daily. Its location near National Highway-1 makes it a critical center for treating road accident victims. However, due to the staff shortage, emergency and regular medical services are severely affected.

Infrastructure Deficiencies

  • No electricians, washermen, or plumbers to maintain the hospital.
  • Lack of canteen and cycle stand facilities, causing inconvenience to patients and staff.

Authorities Acknowledge the Crisis

Dr. Parminder Kaur, the Senior Medical Officer (SMO), admitted that the hospital is struggling to function due to a lack of staff. She confirmed that multiple requests have been sent to higher authorities to fill vacant positions and provide missing medical equipment.

Human Rights Commission Steps In

The State Human Rights Commission (SHRC) has asked the Civil Surgeon to submit a report on the hospital’s staffing and infrastructure crisis. However, no immediate solutions have been implemented so far.

Urgent Action Needed

The Punjab government must take swift action to address these glaring deficiencies in Phagwara Civil Hospital, ensuring that essential healthcare services remain accessible to the people.
