Kolkata, January 28 – A third-year postgraduate trainee at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital was arrested for allegedly running over a 47-year-old rickshaw puller on B T Road. The victim was declared dead on arrival at the hospital.

Incident Details

  • The accident occurred on Saturday around 4 PM near Sinthi on B T Road under the jurisdiction of Cossipore Police Station.
  • A car coming from Shyambazar hit the rickshaw from behind, causing the rickshaw puller to fall.
  • The driver attempted to flee the scene, but in the process, the car ran over the victim and collided with another vehicle before being abandoned.
  • The driver fled on foot but was later arrested from his residence around 9 PM on Saturday.

Legal Proceedings & Defense Argument

  • The doctor was booked under culpable homicide not amounting to murder, a charge for reckless acts leading to death.
  • His lawyer argued in Sealdah Court that the doctor dozed off at the wheel after completing a 48-hour hospital shift.
  • The doctor claimed he became drowsy and lost control of the car, leading to the accident.
  • On Sunday, the court granted him bail.

Similar Case in Medical Community

Recently, the Gudamba police busted a child trafficking racket, arresting a private clinic doctor accused of masterminding the operation. The racket allegedly targeted poor families and sold newborns to childless couples for money.
