Hyderabad/Raipur : In a deeply tragic incident, a postgraduate medical student pursuing MD in Forensic Medicine and Toxicology (FMT) at AIIMS Raipur allegedly died by suicide, citing extreme work pressure as the reason in a note recovered by police.
The student, originally from Hyderabad, was found hanging from the ceiling fan of his residence in Raipur late Saturday night. His colleagues alerted authorities after he failed to report to the hospital on time and did not respond to phone calls. Upon reaching his flat, they discovered the body.
A suicide note recovered from the room reportedly expressed deep distress over excessive workload and apologized to his parents for the drastic step.
According to Amar Ujala, the student had locked the door from inside before ending his life. His body has been sent for postmortem, and a formal police investigation has been initiated.
The incident has triggered nationwide concern among medical professionals and associations.
Dr Dhruv Chauhan, National President of the IMA Junior Doctors Network, raised critical questions on social media platform X (formerly Twitter):
“How long will it take the National Medical Commission to enquire into the cases of depression and suicides amongst doctors?”
The Telangana Senior Resident Doctors Association (TSRDA) also released a statement expressing sorrow and frustration:
“Words feel inadequate to express the sorrow… Continuous harassment and unbearable work pressure led him to take the only step he thought would bring closure.”
The association has demanded an impartial probe into the incident and accountability for faculty members allegedly responsible for the toxic work environment.
This case adds to a growing list of suicides among young doctors and medical students in India, highlighting the urgent need for systemic reform, mental health support, and workload management in medical institutions.
