Next-generation robotic-assisted technology introduced at Mahim and Khar facilities to enhance orthopaedic precision and patient recovery

P. D. Hinduja Hospital & Medical Research Centre has strengthened its orthopaedic care services with the introduction of the advanced CORI Surgical System for robotic-assisted knee and hip replacement surgeries at its Mahim and Khar centres.

Developed by Smith+Nephew, the next-generation handheld robotic-assisted platform is designed to improve surgical precision, personalised joint replacement planning, implant positioning, and overall surgical accuracy during orthopaedic procedures.

CORI Surgical System offers image-free robotic-assisted technology

Unlike many traditional robotic systems used in orthopaedic surgeries, the CORI Surgical System does not require a pre-operative CT scan. This image-free robotic-assisted technology helps reduce radiation exposure for patients while making the surgical workflow more efficient and patient-friendly.

The system enables surgeons to perform total knee replacement, partial knee replacement, hip replacement, and complex revision joint replacement surgeries with enhanced accuracy and real-time intraoperative data.

According to the hospital, the technology maps a patient’s knee or hip anatomy during surgery and assists surgeons in creating a highly personalised surgical plan tailored to the patient’s unique anatomy.

The platform also provides real-time data and haptic feedback, allowing surgeons to achieve millimetre-level precision while protecting healthy bone and surrounding soft tissues.

Technology expected to improve recovery and long-term outcomes

Hospital officials stated that robotic-assisted joint replacement surgeries can particularly benefit patients suffering from severe knee arthritis, chronic joint pain, joint deformities, instability, and cases where conservative treatments such as physiotherapy and medication have not delivered adequate results.

The technology is expected to support quicker rehabilitation, reduced post-operative discomfort, improved mobility, enhanced joint stability, and better long-term implant performance.

As part of a special introductory offering, robotic-assisted knee and hip replacement surgeries using the CORI Surgical System will be available at no additional cost for a limited period at P. D. Hinduja Hospital & Medical Research Centre.

Hospital leadership highlights personalised and data-driven care

Mr Gautam Khanna, CEO of P. D. Hinduja Hospital & Medical Research Centre, said the launch reflects the hospital’s commitment to bringing advanced global medical innovations to patients.

He stated that the technology will help clinicians deliver more precise, personalised, and data-driven orthopaedic care while improving patient outcomes and recovery experiences.

Dr Sanjay Agarwala, Director – Professional Services and Section Head of Orthopaedics & Traumatology at the hospital, said the CORI Surgical System allows surgeons to adopt a more personalised and accurate approach to joint replacement surgeries.

He explained that the system provides real-time surgical information that helps doctors make informed decisions regarding implant positioning, tissue balance, and alignment during procedures.

According to Dr Agarwala, the robotic platform enhances surgical judgement and precision rather than replacing the surgeon, while also offering versatility for complex revision joint replacement surgeries.

With the introduction of the CORI Surgical System, P. D. Hinduja Hospital & Medical Research Centre aims to further integrate advanced global technologies with specialised clinical expertise to deliver patient-centric orthopaedic care.
