New Delhi: The Union Health Ministry has announced a significant milestone in India’s fight against malaria, revealing that the number of malaria cases has decreased by over 97% since independence.

At the time of India’s independence in 1947, malaria was a major public health challenge, with an estimated 7.5 crore cases annually and 8,00,000 deaths. Thanks to decades of concerted efforts, the number of cases has reduced to just 20 lakh, with deaths plunging to only 83 by 2023.

This remarkable achievement reflects India’s commitment to eradicating malaria and improving the public health of its citizens.

Progress Towards Malaria Elimination

Citing the World Malaria Report 2024 from the World Health Organization (WHO), the ministry highlighted India’s substantial progress between 2017 and 2023, which includes a dramatic reduction in both malaria cases and deaths. India’s success has led to its exit from the WHO’s High Burden to High Impact (HBHI) group in 2024, marking a major turning point in the country’s malaria elimination efforts.

Zero Malaria in 122 Districts

In 2023, 122 districts across various states reported zero malaria cases. The Ministry also emphasized that India’s efforts in capacity building and research have been key to this success. In 2024 alone, over 850 health professionals were trained through National Refresher Trainings to better tackle malaria control.

Vision for a Malaria-Free India by 2030

India remains determined to eliminate malaria by 2030. The government aims to achieve zero indigenous malaria cases by 2027 and prevent the re-establishment of the disease. With a combination of strategic frameworks, robust interventions, and active community engagement, India is setting a global benchmark in malaria elimination, reinforcing its commitment to public health excellence.
