CHENNAI: The management of Government Omandurar Medical College has conducted a preliminary inquiry into allegations of ragging involving first-year MBBS students, following directives from the National Medical Commission (NMC). The investigation report will be submitted to the NMC shortly.

The issue came to light on November 26, when several first-year students lodged an online complaint with the University Grants Commission’s (UGC) anti-ragging cell, which forwarded the matter to the NMC. Sources revealed that no immediate action was taken by the college management despite students raising concerns. Allegedly, senior students had been ragging the freshers since their admission.

In response, the NMC instructed the college management and Triplicane police to investigate the matter. The commission also mandated the inclusion of students, parents, police personnel, and NGO representatives in the college’s anti-ragging committee.

Dean Dr. A. Aravind stated that the inquiry revealed seniors had forced juniors to complete an excessive volume of record notebook writing within a strict timeframe. He added that the finalized report would be submitted online once all committee members sign it.

Contrary to claims by some sources about the absence of an anti-ragging committee, Dr. Aravind clarified that such a committee exists but is being expanded to meet the NMC’s requirement of at least 15 members. The revised committee will include police officers, parents, and students to ensure broader representation.
