Man Posing as Orthopaedic Surgeon on Matrimonial Site Tricks Woman
Mumbai: A man impersonating “Dr. Mohit,” an orthopaedic surgeon allegedly stationed in Gaza, duped a Mumbai-based lawyer of Rs 6 lakh in a carefully orchestrated matrimonial scam. Borivli Police have registered an FIR following the complaint.
Victim Contacted Accused via Matrimonial Website and WhatsApp
The victim created a profile on a matrimonial site in July and connected with the accused, who claimed to work for an international humanitarian organisation. After moving conversations to WhatsApp, the accused maintained contact via calls and messages using an international number.
False Travel Clearances Lead to Financial Demands
The accused said he needed clearance from a law firm managing his employer’s documentation to travel to India. The complainant emailed the firm, which later demanded $3700 for travel via the Philippines. After initial transfer failures, she sent funds to an Indian bank account provided by the accused.
Additional Payments for NBI and Tax Clearance Certificates
The accused later claimed he required a National Bureau of Investigation clearance to enter India, followed by demands for a tax clearance certificate. In total, the complainant paid Rs 6 lakh trusting the accused.
Suspicion Arises; Complaint Lodged with Cybercrime Authorities
When asked why his friends and family weren’t sending money, the accused gave evasive answers. The victim then ceased payments and filed a complaint with the national cybercrime portal and Borivli Police.
