Alleged Violation of Patient Safety Protocols

Guwahati: The Additional District Health Commissioner (ADC) has issued a show-cause notice to senior gynaecologist Dr Kantheswar Bordoloi of Morigaon Civil Hospital for allegedly performing 21 caesarean deliveries within just 10 hours, raising concerns over patient safety and adherence to sterilisation norms.

The notice requires Dr Bordoloi to submit a detailed report on each case within three days, including preoperative and postoperative notes, sterilisation procedures, fetal distress documentation, Sick Neonatal Care Unit (SNCU) admissions, and the roles of assisting staff.

Hospital Inspection Findings

During a hospital inspection on September 6, the ADC observed inadequate maintenance of medical records, stressing that proper documentation is crucial for infection control and prevention of maternal and infant morbidity and mortality.

Doctor’s Response and Defence

Dr Bordoloi defended his actions, stating that he operated based on patients’ and babies’ conditions, following medical indications. He noted that typical caesarean procedures take around 25 minutes, but less complicated cases can be completed in about 15 minutes.

He also explained that the hospital’s operating theatre has two tables, enabling alternating sterilisation without compromising safety. Out of the 21 cases, 19 mothers and infants have been discharged in stable condition, while two remain hospitalised, including one referred to Gauhati Medical College and Hospital.

Expressing frustration, Dr Bordoloi remarked, “Though this is not a big deal, it is frustrating to face such questions after so many years of service. I might resign from government service if such conspiracies continue against me.”

Official Concerns

The ADC’s notice highlighted serious concerns over adherence to SOPs, record-keeping, and patient safety protocols. The administration has demanded a comprehensive case-wise report to ensure proper oversight and accountability.
