36-year-old patient’s death sparks controversy in Dera Bassi; probe ordered as hospital denies allegations

Mohali: In a disturbing incident near the Dera Bassi–Ambala road, a 36-year-old man lost his life at a private hospital, with his family alleging gross medical negligence during treatment. The case has triggered tension at the hospital premises and prompted a police investigation.

Patient Admitted with Chest Pain, Underwent Stent Procedure

According to family members, the deceased—who resided in GBP Society, Dera Bassi—was admitted on April 4 after experiencing mild chest pain. He reportedly drove himself to the hospital and was subsequently advised to undergo a cardiac stent procedure.

Condition Worsened, Brain Surgery Conducted

The family claimed that the patient’s health deteriorated soon after the heart procedure. Doctors allegedly informed them about a blockage in the brain and proceeded with a brain surgery.

Post-surgery, the patient never regained consciousness and was placed on ventilator support. He was declared dead on April 13 at around 5 pm.

Family Alleges Negligence, Unnecessary Ventilator Use

The grieving family, including his wife, father, and brother, has accused the hospital of serious negligence. They alleged that:

  • Brain surgery was conducted without proper communication
  • The patient was kept on a ventilator unnecessarily
  • The hospital attempted to extract large sums of money

Two doctors involved in the treatment have been specifically held responsible by the family.

Protest at Hospital, Police Step In

Following the death, the family created a ruckus inside the hospital premises, accusing the medical staff of negligence. Police officials reached the spot to control the situation and assured the family that a fair investigation would be conducted.

Hospital Denies Allegations, Cites Medical Complications

Responding to the accusations, Dr. Vineesh Narula, GM Operations of the hospital, expressed condolences but rejected the claims as baseless.

He stated that the hospital had obtained consent and informed the family about potential complications. According to him, a CT scan conducted after the cardiac procedure revealed a brain clot, which required immediate intervention.

“Despite our best efforts, we could not save the patient,” he said.

Police Confirm Complaint, Medical Board to Probe

Sumit Mor, Station House Officer of Dera Bassi, confirmed that a formal complaint has been received. The body has been kept at the hospital, and a medical board will be constituted by the Civil Surgeon, Mohali, to investigate the case.

Further legal action will be taken based on the findings of the inquiry.

Investigation Underway

Authorities have assured that all aspects of the case, including medical procedures and consent protocols, will be examined thoroughly to determine whether negligence occurred.
