Alleged Medical Negligence at Government Hospital in West Jaintia Hills Raises Concern

Shillong: The Meghalaya Human Rights Commission on Friday took suo motu cognisance of the death of a 37-year-old pregnant woman, Pynche Bareh, and her unborn child, allegedly due to medical negligence at a government hospital in West Jaintia Hills district. The incident occurred at the first referral hospital on June 4.

Incident Details and Family’s Account
Pynche Bareh, from Jalaphet village in East Jaintia Hills, reportedly suffered severe abdominal pain from 5:30 pm, worsening by 8:10 pm. Despite the alarming symptoms, she was allegedly unattended by hospital doctors. She was declared dead at 9:15 pm, with the fetus also reported dead.

Commission’s Action and Inquiry Ordered
The Human Rights Commission has issued a notice to the Health Department Principal Secretary, demanding a thorough inquiry and a detailed report by a specified date. The Commission aims to ensure accountability and prevent such incidents in the future.

District Administration Forms Probe Committee
The district administration constituted a committee led by Additional Deputy Commissioner B. Blah to investigate the case. The committee is expected to submit its findings by Monday.

Similar Case Raises Further Concerns
Earlier reports from Hazaribag’s Sheikh Bhikhari Medical College and Hospital highlighted another disturbing incident of alleged medical negligence involving a pregnant woman who was turned away after nurses incorrectly declared fetal death. Hours later, she delivered a healthy baby at a private hospital, spotlighting serious lapses in medical care in public institutions.

Call for Improved Maternal Care
These cases underline the urgent need for better supervision, prompt medical attention, and accountability in government hospitals, especially concerning maternal health and emergency care for pregnant women.
