Faridabad: In a significant advancement for robotic-assisted orthopaedic surgery in India, Marengo Asia Hospitals, Faridabad, has introduced the country’s first Tele-Proctor Robotic Knee Replacement Mentorship Program. The initiative aims to make advanced robotic knee replacement surgeries accessible to patients in tier-2 and tier-3 cities by enabling expert surgeons to remotely guide procedures in real time.

67-Year-Old Woman Undergoes Successful Tele-Proctored Robotic Knee Surgery in Palwal

As part of the new program, a 67-year-old woman from Palwal, Haryana, successfully underwent robotic knee replacement surgery. The procedure was performed by orthopaedic surgeon Dr. Inderjeet Singh at his centre in Palwal, while receiving live remote guidance from Dr. Anurag Aggarwal, Clinical Director and Head of Orthopaedics & Robotic Joint Replacement at Marengo Asia Hospitals, Faridabad.

The initiative is designed to reduce travel burdens, lower treatment costs, and improve access to advanced surgical care for patients living outside major metropolitan areas.

Tele-Proctoring Enhances Surgical Precision and Training

Speaking about the innovation, Dr. Anurag Aggarwal said tele-proctoring is helping bridge the gap between technical training and real-world surgical expertise by allowing experienced robotic surgeons to supervise and guide procedures remotely.

According to him, robotic knee replacement surgeries benefit significantly from expert oversight in critical areas such as pre-operative planning, limb alignment, implant sizing, implant positioning, and gap balancing, all of which play a vital role in determining surgical outcomes and long-term joint stability.

Dr. Aggarwal noted that his team has already supported multiple robotic knee replacement procedures in cities such as Palwal through remote guidance, demonstrating the effectiveness of tele-proctorship in improving surgeon confidence, procedural accuracy, and patient outcomes.

Improving Access to Advanced Orthopaedic Care

Dr. Navneet Singh Chhabra, Facility Director at Marengo Asia Hospitals, Faridabad, said the hospital is committed to bringing specialized healthcare services to underserved regions.

He stated that the tele-proctoring initiative reflects the institution’s focus on delivering world-class, patient-centric healthcare while improving the quality of life for individuals suffering from knee joint disorders. He added that the hospital aims to expand access to such advanced services across India and internationally.

Local Surgeons Benefit from Expert Remote Guidance

Dr. Inderjit Singh, Orthopaedic Surgeon at Gurunanak Hospital, Palwal, described the tele-proctored robotic knee replacement as a major step toward decentralizing advanced orthopaedic care.

He said that expert support through tele-robotic technology enabled the local surgical team to provide precision-driven treatment while ensuring high standards of patient care. The collaboration highlights how technology and medical expertise can work together to bridge healthcare disparities between urban and non-urban regions.

Advanced Technology Powers Tele-Proctoring

The tele-proctoring platform utilizes advanced telecommunication systems integrated with fully automated robotic technologies such as MISSO. The system provides secure connectivity, real-time monitoring, and enhanced surgical precision, allowing expert surgeons to remotely supervise procedures and support operating teams with exceptional accuracy.

With robotic-assisted surgery becoming increasingly common in orthopaedics, tele-proctoring is expected to play a crucial role in expanding access to specialized care, improving surgeon training, and ensuring consistent clinical outcomes across different healthcare settings.
