District Recommends License Cancellation of Khwaza Baba Nursing Home; Another Facility Sealed for Violations
Malda, West Bengal:
In a stern response to alleged medical negligence leading to the tragic deaths of a mother and her newborn son, the Malda district administration has imposed a Rs 5 lakh penalty on Khwaza Baba Nursing Home, located in Kaliachak, and recommended suspension or cancellation of its clinical establishment license.
The action follows a complaint filed by the grieving husband, a resident of Jharkhand, who alleged that on June 12, an ambulance driver misled the family while en route to Malda Medical College and Hospital (MMCH) and diverted them to the Khwaza Baba Nursing Home.
C-Section Without Proper Tests Alleged
According to the complainant, the nursing home performed a C-section at night without adequate medical tests. Soon after birth, the newborn’s condition worsened, prompting the hospital to advise transfer to MMCH. The next morning, the husband claimed that he returned to find his wife’s body being moved without any clear explanation or medical documentation.
A district surveillance team launched an investigation based on the complaint and reportedly uncovered multiple violations, including:
- Lack of medical documentation
- Irregularities in Swasthya Sathi scheme records
- Procedural lapses during delivery
ADM Confirms Serious Healthcare Norm Violations
Additional District Magistrate Sheikh Ansar Ahmed told The Millennium Post,
“We are not going to tolerate any negligence in health services. The nursing home was found to be in serious violation of healthcare norms. A Rs 5 lakh penalty has been imposed and we have recommended cancellation or suspension of its clinical establishment license.”
He also confirmed that the facility has been permanently removed from the Swasthya Sathi scheme, which provides free healthcare coverage to economically weaker citizens.
While the nursing home has denied all allegations, the administration maintains that accountability and patient safety are of the utmost priority.
Second Nursing Home Sealed in Malda
In a related development, Maa Sayera Nursing Home in Chanchal II block was sealed on Tuesday after allegedly continuing operations despite prior closure notices from both the ADM (Health) and Chief Medical Officer of Health (CMOH).
Key violations at Maa Sayera Nursing Home included:
- Expired Clinical Establishment (CE) license
- Absence of Resident Medical Officer (RMO) and General Nursing Midwife (GNM)
- Lack of West Bengal Pollution Control Board clearance
This action was also initiated following the death of another pregnant woman at the facility.
Widening Crackdown on Medical Malpractice
These cases have intensified scrutiny of private healthcare facilities in the region. Authorities have vowed to crack down on unauthorized and unsafe practices and ensure that stringent regulations are followed to protect patient lives.
