CBI Detains Accused in Ongoing Financial Fraud Investigation
Malda: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has arrested the facility manager of Malda Medical College and Hospital (MMCH) on corruption charges. The arrest took place on Tuesday morning, when a CBI team led by a Sub-Inspector (SI) and three officials apprehended the accused at the MMCH campus.
Legal Proceedings and Transfer to Kolkata
Following the arrest, the accused was taken to English Bazar Police Station for legal formalities. The CBI, with assistance from local police, secured a transit remand from the Malda court to transfer him to Kolkata, where further investigation will take place.
Accused’s History of Financial Corruption
Reports indicate that the accused, who was transferred to MMCH four months ago from Alipurduar Government Hospital, has a history of financial misconduct in the healthcare sector. Previously, he served as the ward master at Baranagar Hospital in Kamarhati and was arrested in Kolkata’s Alipore area in connection with a major financial fraud case.
Despite being released on bail, he repeatedly failed to appear for court hearings, ultimately leading to his CBI arrest.
Concerns Over Corruption in Medical Institutions
The arrest has sparked concerns about financial irregularities in government-run hospitals. Reacting to the incident, Malda Medical College Medical Superintendent-cum-Vice-Principal (MSVP) Prasenjit Kumar Bar stated:
“The CBI has arrested our facility manager in connection with an old case on the power of a warrant. He joined our college four months ago after being transferred from Alipurduar.”
With the investigation ongoing, authorities are expected to further probe financial practices within government medical institutions.
