Kottayam, Special Correspondent: T. K. Jayakumar, Superintendent of Kottayam Medical College Hospital, announced that several key facilities at the hospital are ready for inauguration, marking a significant boost in infrastructure and patient care services.
New Facilities on the Verge of Launch
The facilities ready for use include the surgical block, paramedical hostel, cath lab, biogas plant, renovated outpatient department (OPD), and a lactation unit. These developments aim to enhance both medical services and hospital infrastructure for patients and staff.
Review Meeting Led by Ministers
The announcement was made during a review meeting convened by Ports Minister V. N. Vasavan on Saturday to assess progress on ongoing construction works. Health Minister Veena George, Additional Chief Secretary (Health) Rajan Khobragade, and Director of Medical Education K. V. Vishwanathan attended the meeting online.
Completion of Surgical and Cardiology Blocks
Under the Kerala Infrastructure Investment Fund Board (KIIFB) project, both the cardiology block and the surgical block have been completed. With these upgrades, the hospital now boasts a total of 14 fully functional operating theatres, up from the previous seven.
Penalty Considerations for Delays
Health Minister Veena George instructed officials to consider imposing penalties on the contractor for not completing the super-speciality block within the scheduled timeframe, highlighting accountability measures in the ongoing projects.
Progress on Infectious Disease Department
The Executive Engineer of the Public Works Department (Buildings) reported that the infectious disease treatment department building has reached 60% completion and is expected to be ready by February. Officials were also asked to expedite the demolition of the long-unused EFG block.
Power Supply Improvements
Minister V. N. Vasavan directed a special meeting with the Electricity Minister and KIIFB representatives to discuss the construction of a 110 kV substation. The new substation aims to provide an uninterrupted and reliable power supply for hospital operations.

With these upgrades, Kottayam Medical College Hospital is poised to offer improved patient care, enhanced medical facilities, and better support for healthcare professionals. Officials emphasized the importance of timely completion and accountability in ongoing and future projects.
