Mumbai: The Maharashtra Medical Council (MMC) has been praised by foreign medical graduates (FMGs) for allocating internships to 759 candidates from both domicile and non-domicile categories.
Dr. Apurv Dalvi, National Convenor of the Foreign Medical Students’ Wing (FMSW) of the All India Medical Students’ Association (AIMSA), lauded MMC’s efforts, stating that compared to other states facing seat vacancy issues, MMC’s inclusive approach is commendable.
Recently, the AIMSA FMSW team met with MMC’s newly appointed Registrar to discuss concerns affecting medical students and FMGs from Maharashtra.
Key Issues Discussed
Dr. Dalvi highlighted the discussion on permanent registration and delays in granting provisional registration. He noted that the MMC administrator is already working to expedite these processes.
The AIMSA FMSW team also submitted a letter to MMC Administrator Dr. Vinky Rughwani, emphasizing critical concerns regarding registration procedures.
- Timely Counselling for FMGE Passouts:
The association urged the MMC to start counselling sessions for FMGE July 2024 passouts promptly. This would help graduates secure provisional registration and advance their careers. - Delays in Provisional Registration:
Many FMGE graduates from the June 2023 and December 2023 batches reported waiting for 5-6 months despite completing their applications. The prolonged delay has caused stress and hindered career progress. - Delays in Permanent Registration:
The association pointed out that graduates who completed their internships face similar delays in receiving permanent registration, with some waiting over six months. This has impeded their ability to practice and advance their medical careers.
The association urged the council to streamline and expedite these processes to alleviate the challenges faced by medical graduates and ensure timely registration for all eligible candidates.
