Doctors, nurses demand FIR after alleged vandalism at Vice-Chancellor’s office
Lucknow: Doctors, nurses, and staff members of King George’s Medical University (KGMU) in Lucknow have announced plans to protest, citing police inaction in filing an FIR following a ruckus at the Vice-Chancellor’s office last Friday. The incident reportedly occurred when a group, including a political leader and the vice-chairperson of the Uttar Pradesh Women’s Commission, allegedly attempted to forcefully enter the VC’s office.
Background: Alleged ‘Love Jihad’ Case
The disturbance is linked to the ongoing controversy at KGMU involving a senior resident doctor accused of sexual exploitation and forcing religious conversion. Medical Dialogues had earlier reported that the accused doctor had gone absconding but was recently arrested by a joint team of the Surveillance Unit of West Lucknow and Police Station Chowk.
Female Doctor’s Suicide Attempt
The case came to light after a female doctor allegedly attempted suicide on December 27 by consuming a large quantity of medicines in her hostel room. She was immediately admitted to the Trauma Centre and later shifted to the Critical Care Management (CCM) ICU for advanced treatment. She claimed that her male colleague, belonging to the Muslim community, had emotionally exploited her and pressured her to convert to Islam to marry him, continuing harassment after her refusal.
Similar Allegations by Another Doctor
Another female doctor, who reportedly married the accused after meeting him at Agra Medical College, made similar claims of forced religious conversion. These allegations have intensified scrutiny over the campus environment and safety protocols.
Police Yet to File FIR
Following the ruckus, the KGMU Chief Proctor filed a complaint; however, no FIR has been registered yet, with police stating their investigation is ongoing. University authorities confirmed police deployment on campus to address immediate safety concerns.
Repeated Incidents Raise Security Concerns
Campus sources stated that this was not an isolated incident. In the past two weeks, at least five groups of individuals had entered the campus seeking information about the alleged ‘love jihad’ case. A senior faculty member said, “The recent incident of vandalism has heightened concerns about security at the university.”
Claims of Administrative Blockade
Reports indicated that Yadav, the political leader involved, approached the VC claiming the administration was preventing female students and faculty from approaching the State Women’s Commission. Supporters allegedly attempted to force entry, leading the university to report vandalism and submit CCTV evidence to police.
Staff Demands and University Response
Addressing the matter, KGMU spokesperson Dr. KK Singh stated that unions representing employees, resident doctors, nurses, and faculty considered protesting but were advised to follow legal channels to avoid disrupting patient care. “Our two main demands are addressing security concerns and filing an FIR. While police presence has been ensured on campus, the FIR remains pending. A meeting is scheduled for Monday to finalize action,” he added.
